Hi Peter

Isn't cosmological redshift somewhat different from the dopler effect ?

It is analogous to it – the Doppler redshift seen on Earth is the effect due to objects actually moving away or towards. They actually have momentum/velocity. In cosmological redshift, it is the space in between the objects that is expanding.

The equations are close, but also a little different – but I cannot remember them (and certainly could not type it out here)

I will have to look out for Earth Story – don’t know it.

However here in Oz we are about 18 months behind on such matters.

Though I think I might have seen Stephen Hawking’s universe on the history channel… not sure if it is the same one.

As for the region 1 business – buy a multi-region player. Problem solved – it will cost about 20 pounds for a machine I bet.

Hi Pete,

Thought I would comment here if that is OK?

Martin has definitely stated that (a) the speed of light can change in a vacuum

I thought so, it was why I have been repeating myself over and over again about it.

Funny, when challenged, he changed his mind :-)

and also that is why we need glasses.

Erm… does Martin know that glass isn’t a vacuum?

we don't know the speed of light art the Andromeda galaxy

Which is why I have challenged him on Maxwell’s equations, c is a constant – it is how electromagnetic waves behave. Both here and Andromeda.

Prove the theory wrong here on Earth, and I might believe him that we have no idea what is happening over at Andromeda.

He fails...

Also, has Martin actually thought of the consequences of changing the speed of light – it will muck up E=mc^2, stars will be acting crazy for starters.

Oh, and we can measure the speed of light at Andromeda – we measure the spectral lines. They are precisely as we would expect

If c was different in andromeda, the lines would be different.

Of course, it is only a theory – but it just so happens to work. Something Martin forgets.

(c) we don't know how fast time is running at the Andromeda galaxy....

Not sure how that would help his claims, but he does just make it up as his goes along.

by the way, if you click on the little "follow this discussion by e-mail" icon at the bottom of the page, you'll be able to pick up on the replies more easily....

Thanks, it easier, but still nearly impossible for me to follow – my gmail just mixes them all up, and if I follow a link it is sometimes ‘dead’

Oh hum
