Closer to the Return of Christ?

"We all need to tighten our belts, and realise that whatever the future holds, we are living in a world that has largely rejected the Jesus of the Gospel – either out of ignorance, (which is forgivable, and the reason we have missions), or by deliberate choice, (which may well bring judgement). One thing is sure, we are being brought closer to the return of Christ. That has to be a good thing, because here on earth we have no everlasting city. But tribulation and birth-pains must be endured…See More

John Ruffle replied to Premier Community Administrator's discussion Are we meant to 'Lent'?
"Biblically, prayer and fasting is indeed a question of "when" rather than "if". This is totally New Testament. Having established that, let us now consider the tradition of the Church down through 2,000 years. It is only some…"

Profile Information

Denomination:
Non-denominational
Theological outlook:
High church / Catholic
About Me:
Part of my spiritual formation was in a Christian charismatic/penticostalist common-purse community in N. California during the 1970s 'Jesus Movement' revival. Since then I have returned to my Catholic roots. I am an educator in UK and abroad, and am involved in missions within the context of the Catholic charsimatic renewal.

Favourite Bible Verse
If I could only have one book on a desert island, I guess it would be Gospel of John. I read the Pauline epistles a lot however.
Spiritual Inspirations
Believers around the world who daily face persecution and poverty.

Also: Jesus; the Desert Fathers and Mothers; monastic tradition; the Saints; Vatican II; the Californian Jesus Movement; my own Mum and Dad, and Jim Durkin. And in no particular order, let's not forget Billy Graham; Martin Luther King Jr; Mother Theresa; Nelson Mandela; Thomas Merton; Bishop Nigel (N.T.) Wright; Alister McGrath; C.S. Lewis..

Bishop of Fulham's Response to Rome

The promulgamation of Anglicanorum Coetibus last Monday was a momentus event. I will not add comment, but woudl like you to read what Bishop John Broadhurst, Bishop of Fulham has said about it. Although not technically my own bishop (yet), through my involvement with Forward in Faith I am aqauinted with Bishop John, and I have no hesitation is saying that he is a man of unity, who is pained by division, and who loves our Lord Jesus… Continue

Peace

End of the week and lots to give thanks for... most of all, of course, to give thanks for the saving grace of Jesus Christ who keeps us safe and in His presence continually. Not that victory does not come without pain. I don't judge success by the avoidance of trouble or pain, but rather.. was God's Kingdom mirrored here on earth? Tonight, we are off to a meeting with Brother Peter Scothern, (an old-school healing evangelist and… Continue

Autumn Reflections

Autumn is here, and the sun shines at an angle creating long lingering shadows through a lattice of trees beginning to shed multi-coloured leaves. Autumn is a great time of change; of releasing the old and not quite looking forward to the new. It is the time when the ground becomes fertile; a time that slips past us all too soon, unless an effort is made to enjoy the season changing, and to get out to the countryside and a slower pace… Continue

LENT 1

Ash Wednesday, 25th February 2009

The launch of the Lenten season... and 46 days to go to Easter Sunday. Not 40, because Sundays are NEVER counted as fast days, so technically, Lenten observances don't count on the Lord's Day. I'm going to try to keep any blog followers out…

A Premier Group for 20th Century Christianity Anyone?

Anyone interested in co-hosting a Premier Group on 20th Century Church History? Could be a good ecumenical project, especially if we were able to unearth members with specific interests in particular subjects or church streams.

Let me know: but it must have some relevance to what we are as the 21st Century Church and the quickening pace of "convergence".. these are exciting days! We are now deep enough into the new millennium to make a historical analysis of 20th century Christian… Continue

Aimee McPherson, Orthodoxy and Doing 21st Century Church

On first look, Westminster Roman Catholic Cathedral in London (pictured left, in 2008) and evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson's 'Angelus Temple' (opened in 1923 and the first modern "mega-church") share little in common. But read to the end of this post...

Opening one of the world's…

The Reader training was a three year course, mostly tutorials and assignments. In aaddition we had some residential weekends with Winchester Diocese. Our Reader training on the Isle of Wight is done jointly with the Methodists ( as it is in Bristol I believe). Yes discernment is so important, so that we know that we are called and gifted by God, and this is confirmed through His Church.

Hello "not very weird at all"!

Thanks for your reply. As to ministry, I am in an evangelical CofE, but I am discovering my own catholic tastes. My husband worships with the Quakers, preferring a less liturgical, more silent (and no choirs) form of worship. There is space for all surely. God's leading me intomore contemplative worship fits well with the Quaker waiting in silence.

As to gifting, my Vicar who has just retired identified a gift of reconciliation in me so it is exciting to see how that will find fruition. I believe this may include people coming to terms with past life experiences, as I have had to myself, but also being reconciled to others and to God. Watch this space.

Good to see your contributions in the poetry and brickbats groups on Premier.

I see we have a few things in common- like Anglican.. Gospel of John..early Church Fathers..Thomas Merton etc.. I was recently licensed as a Lay Reader in the Church of England at Portsmoth Cathedral- wonderful day, with family, friends, my Church choir singing a piece by John Rutter. Now I am getting more experience in preaching and leading services, but will also have a priority for pstoral ministry. Are you still a chaplain? Please tell me more about your involvement in prophetic ministry.
