Abram’s Broken Dream
by
Rick Folker

His withered hand sifts through the sand,
While he sleeps…

His only bed now,
These rough, coarse grains
For this lonely, haunted Abraham.

And yet he dreams…

“My descendants are like
stars that have fallen upon a land of
Broken promises and endless hates...
Two sons; two nations
Two faiths.”

And yet only one endless earthquake.

Something causes him to wake
some voices whispering and pleading;
"Remember Isaac, Remember the Knife?”
“No please - Remember your people, remember your wife.”

Lillith-like women laughing,
they torment him unceasingly…

“Go ahead and choose - choose death or choose life!”

In his sleeping, his waking -
The searing sun his only cover
All alone with his stars and his sands -
He waits …
He waits and hopes

And prays to wake

In the hot Arab sun Isaac and Ishmael from afar
Phantoms who vanish
reaching, fighting, arguing for their star.

“Why have you left us bereft of
your dream,
your wish of shalom
Sinking and stinking
Of broken promises

A father who will live through the ages
Whilst Arabs and Jews live through
The wars where broken hearts give birth to newly-found hatreds

Always sleeping and dreaming father
Whilst your sons must be leaving and longing and looking….

And waking

Thanks Rick for posting this amazing piece of poetry in memory of Matthew and all like him who suffer senselessly.

In Memoriam For Matthew

Outside the city gates
In another outpost of
Another heartless Empire

The body of a tender-hearted soul
Seeking a semblance of communion,
Betrayed into believing that even people like us
Could find love

Became the victim of another crucifixion
On that lonely, Laramie plain
Where there were no witnesses, no lamentations,
No mourners to protest the “scandal” of such a cross.

But every October, as the winds here in Kansas turn bitter
My thoughts turn to that hate-filled holocaust that breaks my heart,
That bruises my faith, and burns to the wick
My fledgling hope of acceptance for people like Matt and me;
Or at least a dim flame of tolerance, yes a hope as fierce as a prairie cold,
October wind…

A hope that no more Jews will ever be gassed,
That no more little black girls will be bombed in their church,
That no more Catholic and Protestant school children will be murdered
While playing hopscotch.
Senseless, horrific, and seemingly endless acts of evil that make me understand why
Many believe that God is absent during these dark, cold, frigid days.

And, for me, I can’t find closure in Matt’s passion play.
Laramie’s Good Friday will never have the happy ending of
An Easter Sunday, the joy of an empty tomb, the beginning of new life
And the ending of Last Suppers.

Because, for me, I have to cry out, and I have to see others cry out, and if nothing else,
The stupid stones on a Laramie hillside need to cry out!

Because, you see, my Matthew is still out there, alone, cold, desolate and foresaken
Whenever another gay man or woman is humiliated and vilified.

Because, you see, Matt is gone and I am alive and haunted by a senseless act of evil
Every time I feel a cold wind remind me

That winter is not over yet.

I'm new to this community & have a question... do you guys always just post your poetry on the Comment wall of the Poetry Group page or do you usually enter it as a comment under "My Page"?

I really enjoyed your poem, and found it thought provoking. We all need God's healing first and foremost, and He was so gracious to us, giving us a whole world of natural substances to heal us. As well as giving Doctors wisdom to treat us, although I agree that pills seemed to be dished out so easily, there are many conditions that need medical intervention. I look forward to seeing more of your poems here in the future. God bless you.

HEALING

God's healing is the kindest and the best
It brings health for the body and for the mind rest
It has no harmful side-effects and won't make you ill
Unlike a harsh chemical pill.

Operations, injections and drugs - human ways are crude
We need prevention - pure air, pure water, nutritious food
All of us living life as God intended
Patients with gentle treatments being tended.

We pray researchers God will inspire
And of looking for breakthroughs they'll never tire
We need gentler treatments for the way ahead
Pray that researchers and doctors by God will be led.

God calls the mild and gentle mannered,
the meek shall inherit all the earth.
The loud and hale and hearty,
the high and low from birth.

He claims the alcoholics,
those who live from drink to drink,

the addicts and the down and outs,
however low they sink.

He's waiting tol be refuge to all who live in shame,
if they are willing to say "sorry" in Jesu's mighty name.

He's not concerned with colour,
for He created you,
and we are all His children,
black, white, yellow, even blue!

You could be as ;oor as any beggar,
or have Swiss bank accounts,
He is looking for sincerity,
for that's all that reallly counts.

He takes the litttlest child
and knows they'll grow in grace,
Yes! even Grans and Grandads
with sweet age upon their face.

There's one thing more to mention,
well have you got a clue?
He has placed me safe within His arms
and is waiting here for YOU!
