Just saw this headline over at the Beeb and thought I need someone qualified to tell me if this is really significant or what....
Well, I'd say synthesising DNA that can control a full cell is a pretty big step forward, as is having it divide.
Please enlighten me, Iggy
They didn't create life. They borrowed that from the bacteria. Just another science mutant claiming to be the creation of life. Let's see them do it without borrowing from the life already created.
It's very impresive piece of science, but as always there is no discussion of the responcibility of the scientists to police themselfs and to be responcible for there research.

Was anyone ever prosecuted for the devastating human results of the production of and authorising the administration of Thalidomide to pregnant women?
They are in it for the money, thats why they have a patent on it.

Being a fan of books such as Brave New World I wonder where this is headng. NWO comes to mind
That sounds like someone rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic.

What Ventner has done is to demonstrate a new line of science - artifically created lifeforms. Many thousands of other scientists will follow his teams work.
I'm going to do a blog post on this today and am collecting info (I'm gonna use your comments Iggy if that's acceptable) Do you have a take or opinion on all of this Michael, the ethical side is making big news right now BBC
I am not the person to ask. Look to Francis Collins and Biologos or else those at Christians in Science and the Fraaday Inst, where there are people woth competence on the subject
OK, thank you.
This is like someone bringing out a new movie and calling it the invention of filmmaking and storytelling looool. It's all based on what already exists, just like you can reduce just about any movie to several story archetypes or heck, you can even reduce them down to one story archetype: "David vs Goliath"

What this guy has done is synthesize an organism based on a pre-existing model.

I find this quote from the article especially interesing:

The synthetic bacterium, nicknamed Synthia, has been hailed as a step change in biological engineering, allowing the creation of organisms with specialised functions that could never have evolved in nature.

How did they come to that conclusion? Surely it would be inevitable that such an organism would evolve in nature given enough time? ;) Are they saying this is a "special creation" that could not have been unless someone intentionally made it? How remarkable.
McS

If you are so clever why didn't you do it instead of Venter?
