Should Creation Theory be Taught in Schools Alongside Evolution?

Just spotted this on Premire 10:

Creationism should be taught at schools
There are calls for creationism to be taught at schools.

Revd Prof Michael Reiss says teachers should be able to answer questions on it without ridiculing a child's beliefs while still explaining evolution and the Big Bang theory.

If for instance in an Islamic faith school, it was taught that Mohamed was a fictional character that had never existed (as may happen if the government get their way to standardise the content of curricula) do you think that Moslem parents would take it laying down?

Why then do we insist that evolution is taught as fact, which effectively says that God does not exist. Should then, parents who are Christians have a say in what subjects, that affect the child’s faith, their child should be taught or in what way they are taught (e.g. that evolution is just a theory).

So we have a typical reply from you. One which pokes fun but has no arguments, one that an atheist could equally have written. Does it not worry you that all you can do is abuse people?

So are you not a compromiser? Do you not regard science as having a higher authority than Scripture. Do you not interpret Scripture in light of the current old earth Evolutionary paradigm? A compromiser is a fair description of your position.

I'll stick to what the Bible says and interpret the World in the light of God's Word. That is much safer when you bear in mind the changeability of Man's opinions and the power of God.

So, you're saying that salvation DOES depend on a certain 'interpretation' of Genesis??!!

Whether the people you mention are saved or not is surely dependent on their personal faith and trust in Christ for forgiveness of sin and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, as we've discussed earlier.

You are showing though that a correct grasp of the Gospel message is based on a correct grasp of Genesis and creation.

I became a Christian through creation science, as did many other people I know. What you call a stumbling block to others was my source of salvation.

As for stumbling blocks; something only becomes a stumbling block if the person wants to hold on to something without giving it over to God. The issue itself is not the stumbling block; it is the heart!!

Actually, since salvation is not by intellectual understanding but by the action of the Holy Spirit, a YEC interpretation of Scripture cannot be a stumbling block. What can prevent someone becoming a Christian is believing that they have to do something, that they have to accept Jesus. If you think you have anything to offer God then you do not understand the disgusting wicked state of your own soul and if you do not understand the state of your soul then you should carefully examine your spiritual state to ensure that you are, in fact, saved.

" Had I come across Young earth creationism before i accepted Jesus into my life I woud now definitely be an agnostic. Of that I am certain "

Help me out here Peter; you say Genesis is irrelevant to salvation, so how come you are certain that you would be an agnostic if you had come across young-earth creationists before you accepted Jesus into your life?

As an aside, you talk about accepting Jesus into your life, which sounds as if your relaxing in an armchair and bid your servant to let Jesus in for a visit. Could you please clarify who is the servant and who is the master ?

So Peter, please explain the direct link between your being exposed to mainstream geology and your decision to become a Christian.

" If you think Genesis is literal history I would urge you to go and do a geology course Thorny (the OU is a good place to start). Or perhaps you are afraid of science in case of what you might find. I have also sucessfully passed a degree level astronomy course (S283). Again, the evidence for an old Earth and an even older Universe is overwhelming. "

Why would you urge me to do that? it seems to be important to you that we refuse to believe in a young universe according to a plain reading of Genesis. Why is it so important?

You keep saying 'the evidence is...' but that won't cut it. What is it about astronomy that is so overwhelming?

Actually when a person talks about 'accepting Jesus' it betrays a misunderstanding of salvation which can be such that it provides evidence that the person is not saved. Under such a circumstance it is important for that persons sake to ensure that they are, in fact saved.

We should all question our salvation, testing ourselves to ascertain whether we are saved. That is a healthy, spiritual state. If we have an inadequate view of salvation we should be especially careful to ensure we are saved.

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? ——unless indeed you are disqualified.

Do you not know this, as a preacher of the Gospel? Indeed, what is the Gospel. Is it the pure unfettered saving of dead sinners by a merciful God or the struggling of men to keep God's commands?

Why are you offended? Have you done anything to deserve God's mercy? Is there anything in you that deserves anything other than judgement? The Gospel is God's gift, not, as the phrase you used implies, your acceptance of God. Do you not call yourself 'born again' since Jesus Himself used that very phrase in relation to Salvation? Would you expect me to stand by and allow you to think that you are a Christian when you are not? Would it not be both unkind and disrespectful to allow you to continue in such a state?

Above I've pointed out to Michael that we should all examine ourselves to ensure we are saved, I do it, do you?

You didn't answer my first few questions Peter.

And just how do you know the Andromeda Galaxy is 2.3 million light-years away?

Michael, don't tell me you've become a YEC'er!

" Cephied variables are very young stars that brighten and dim at regular intervals. We can use this to determain their distance from the Earth. Type 1a supernove yeild distances up to 500 times greater than a cepeid variable (using the inverse square law) "

Just how do you know how old they are?

Please explain how they are used to measure distance.

And please explain my earleir query about the link between being exposed to mainstream geology and your hearing and responding to the Gospel message, i.e. what role did it play in your realising 'I must be saved!'

I believe in the bible from beginning to end. If you say you do not believe in the creation story you are saying God is a lyer and the truth is not in you. It is sad it is not taught in schools and I hear a lot of denominations believe in evolution, I know the Catholic Church do.

I prefer to be made in the image of God rather than a monkey.
