The cruxifixtion, death and reserection of Jesus

I have been a Christian for nineteen years, yet in all that time I have never really understood Jesus death on the cross, all the sermons that I ever heard seem to mention it but either talk about life before or life after the cross, yet I have never heard a sermon or talk that explained what was really going on on the cross.
